Apple's newly granted patent hints at how the tech giant is envisioning expanding the external display capabilities of its Vision Pro headset beyond what was initially announced. While the current EyeSight feature shows the eyes of the wearer or a color pattern indicating VR immersion, this patent details using the external display for a wider range of creative applications.
The patent, with Jony Ive listed as an inventor, covers utilising the outward-facing screen on a head-mounted display (HMD) for various interactive functions.
Some playful examples in the patent illustrations include displaying sunglasses over the wearer's eyes, weather forecasts, ‘do not disturb’ signs, and even replacing the eyes with Zoom call icons. Apple notes the patent covers HMDs with external displays to enhance interaction possibilities while wearing an otherwise visually isolating headset.
By completely enclosing the wearer's field of view, devices like the Vision Pro with opaque housings can provide extremely immersive virtual or augmented reality experiences. However, this also blocks outside vision and sounds, potentially making the wearer oblivious to real-world surroundings. The external display offers a way to bridge that gap.
It remains to be seen whether these illustrated EyeSight expansions come to fruition or are just early concept brainstorming. Patent grants don't guarantee features will materialise in actual products.
The announced EyeSight feature itself is relatively simple but enters unexplored territory. It's unclear if displaying the wearer's eyes or VR patterns will actually prove useful for bystander interaction or just appear strange. Until Apple demos EyeSight, it's unknown how well implemented the technology is with launch rumored as very near, the wait may soon end to discover if EyeSight is a genuinely practical integration or just a novelty. Either way, this patent indicates Apple is seriously considering how to evolve the external display into a more versatile communication tool for future iterations.
The Vision Pro aims to push boundaries of wearable tech. While the first version focuses on nailing down core performance and experience, Apple already has long-term visions to build upon that foundation.
