Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Tuesday directed the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) to conduct traffic studies and prepare a detailed project report for the revised metro rail alignment to the airport via Old City and also from LB Nagar.
Soon after assuming power, the Congress-led government had kept aside the previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi government's Rs 6,250-crore Hyderabad Airport Metro plans.
The previous government had chalked out a 31-km stretch connecting Hitec city and the international airport at Shamshabad via the outer ring road, suggesting huge prospects for growth and development along this region.
The present government also called for proposals to add new routes.
Revanth Reddy, during a review meeting with officials, reiterated that the expansion proposals cater to the major parts of the city and shall serve a maximum number of commuters.
The new alignment will connect the city and the airport through the extension of the unfinished MGBS-Falaknuma stretch and connect another corridor to the same from LB Nagar.
The government feels that the outer ring road as such is sufficient for airport connectivity by road and priority for new lines should be given to denser localities that need better transport options.
CM Reddy has asked officials to examine the feasibility of laying a part of the Metro rail in the Laxmiguda-Jalpally-Mamidipally stretch ‘At Grade’ (road level) in the new alignment. As a 40-ft wide central median is available on this stretch without any obstructions, officials believe this can reduce the cost of construction, while the rest of the corridor is being planned as elevated.
Further, officials were also asked to identify large tracts of government land available along this stretch to undertake Transit Oriented Development (TOD), which can contribute to part funding of the Airport Metro project as well as encourage the development of the Old City and its surroundings.
The previous government had decided to undertake the Airport Metro project with state funds, unlike the existing 67-km metro corridors that were built under public-private partnership (PPP) mode. The CM wants the new alignment to be shorter in distance and thereby save cost, besides catering to several parts of the city.
Officials were asked to prepare extensions of the existing Metro corridors to nearby destinations to facilitate the growth of the city in all directions on the following lines:
HMRL's managing director NVS Reddy and Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) Commissioner M Dana Kishore have been asked to quickly prepare the plans and draft a letter to Minister for Ministry of Urban Development and Housing Hardeep Singh Puri.
CM Reddy has also asked for proposals to connect the airport to Kandukur and Srisailam highway, where a mega township is being planned in the land already acquired for Hyderabad Pharma City.
In Metro Phase-III, the government wants the expansion of corridors from Jubilee Bus Station to Shamirpet and from Paradise Metro station to Kandlakoya.
